Gathering of the Clans - Under Arabian Skies Ball

Hello All the Expat's in Doha !!

We are holding an 'event' and what we are doing is hosting a night out for all the 'clans' here in Doha. That means all the clubs/ societies/ etc that we can reach prior to Oct 18th.

We can seat 350 in the Large Tent at the Golf Club, and we will have to get tickets sold 7 days in advance to pay for everything, so it will be first come first served.

We are NOT soliciting funds, asking for donations, or anything else to do with charity. We are simply getting together. This is a chance for all the groups to meet under one roof, so that we can finally see who we all are.

It should be a night of fun and games, and of course 'dressy uppy'. All 'clans' should come in their 'clan' costumes, whatever they may be.

There will be raffles and prizes, music & dancing, and few surprises for the night.... and hopefully a happy time enjoyed by all.

So pass on the details to everyone in the various groups. This is open to everyone too, who has not joined a clan, but would like to round off their Eid holiday with a bit of a 'splash'.

As this is a combined effort, anyone who would like to participate in making the 'event' happen, may call either 5206824, or 5206902 and we will have you tying ribbons on tickets, or hoisting material up onto walls, or whatever else you may be expert in.

Looking forward to your responses.

Breast Cancer Awareness

In the Pink -
October 19th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<><><><><><><>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ladies :)

What started out as an idea for a small gathering to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Awareness Organisation event 'In the Pink' has grown by huge proportions.

We already have around 30 ladies picking out something special to wear on the evening, be advised that we all have to wear a splash of pink. This is a great chance for us to raise awareness for a charity that works so hard to make a difference for those affected by breast cancer, I'm sure if we all think about it, we know at least one person who's life has been touched in some way by this.

http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk/content.php?page_id=2211

Money raised by the nationwide (UK) day will help towards the funding of:

Online chat forums and a free helpline - a lifeline for many sufferers who often feel isolated by the disease

A service that matches people going through breast cancer with a trained volunteer who has already been through it

Courses such as the Younger Women's Forum or Living with Breast Cancer.

All of these services are free but are dependant on fund-raising campaigns such as 'In the Pink'

The cut off date for adding your name to the rapidly growing list is the 15th of September, so that we can be sure of numbers etc.

If you are interested, please contact myself on this email or mobile number 5905865 or Sam on samijam@hotmail.com - Mobile: 564-7374

To be placed VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - nose height

Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in theslightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort.

Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

THE DOHA DEBATES SPECIAL

President Bill Clinton
November 16th, 2005

Former US President Bill Clinton was the guest for the first Doha Debate Special, which was held in November 2005. The theme of the event was 'the demands of leadership' where President Clinton spoke with the students about his time in the White House.

Note: You can watch this event, see more information on this debate,
& others from past debates by going to the webpage (see below)
_____________
The Doha Debates are a public forum for dialogue and freedom of speech in Qatar. They are chaired by the internationally renowned broadcaster Tim Sebastian, formerly of the BBC's HARDTalk programme, and held in the headquarters of the Qatar Foundation in Doha each month during the academic year.

For the past three years, the Doha Debates have been providing a platform for serious discussion of the hottest issues in the Arab and Islamic worlds, striving to be both controversial and informative. They have gained a huge international following through their broadcast on BBC World - the BBC's international television channel.

The Doha Debates are modeled on the Oxford Union debates. A motion is presented to the 350-strong audience and two speakers argue on behalf of the motion and two speak against it. Tim Sebastian questions the speakers on their positions, then opens the debate to questions from the audience. Finally, the audience votes for or against the motion, based on the merit of the arguments they have heard. Our invited speakers are highly regarded academics, politicians, religious figures, government officials, policy experts and journalists from around the world.

The Doha Debates are hosted and funded by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development which is headed by Her Highness, Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al Missned, wife of the Emir of Qatar who is pioneering educational and social reform in Qatar.
Although a project of Qatar Foundation, the Doha Debates are independently run. The Doha Debates team retains full editorial control and is solely responsible for the content of the Debates and the speakers who are invited.

The audience of the Doha Debates is made up of people living or visiting Qatar who register for tickets via the Doha Debates website. About half the audience is comprised of university and senior high school students who study in Qatar but who come from a wide range of Arab countries and beyond.

To register for tickets, please go to, 'Attend The Debates'.

Blokart Wind Powered Fun!

Gone with the Wind

If you're looking for an alternative day out for the family, give the exhiliaring new craze of blokarting a bash. This rather bizarre sounding activity is found to blow your hair back.

Blokarts are three-wheel drive karts with a sail: basically land yachts that are powered by the wind. They can be sailed on the beach, out in the desert or even a space as small as a tennis court.

These little karts are super-fast though and you can traverse a large area within a short space of time, so we'd recommend larger locations.

Children as young as seven can have a go, but everyone will need to be briefed first.

You can rent them for QR 50 for half-an-hour from Gulf Karts (507-2661) and if you really get into it you can buy them from QR 8,500 to QR 12,000 depending on the model. Note: for one hour the price is QR 100

Blokarting began in New Zealand around 2000.

To find out more about blokarting, log on to the http://www.gulfcarts.com/ or http://www.blokart.com/

A package for larger groups who want a morning or afternoon of fun. It is great for schools, team building or birthdays:

Five Blokarts, Safety demo, Test run / practice session, Race format / heats, Grand final for the fastest five, Prize giving

How much does it cost? The price of your fun day will vary depending on your needs. The basic package above is only QR 1500 which will give you all five blokarts for three hours without food and drinks. Groups of more than twenty people will require additional times.

Recycle Bags at Carrefour

Our committment to the environment

Reducing stores impact

Limiting the environmental impact of our stores by offering environmental-friendly alternatives to our customers

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yes, they're here in Doha - buy them, use them, when they wear out you can return them to be replaced for free?

Also, they'll punch a tiny hole in the bag between one of the handles to know I guess that you've bought them when you go back to use them again...

Here's to reducing plastic bags in Doha, Qatar?!
